While some people open the window and turn on the fan, others might snuggle under the covers. What’s the best approach to ensure you feel comfortable and refreshed for a great night’s sleep?

Depending on where you live, the time of year, and your personal preference, you can use different blankets to adjust your body temperature and create the ideal temperature for sleep.

Experts say the best temperature for sleep is 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, every person’s body is unique. The temperature can vary by a few degrees, but for the most part, a cooler temperature is best. At nighttime, we naturally experience a decrease in core body temperature, so keeping your bedroom cooler can help signal to your body that it’s time to sleep.

If your room becomes too warm or too chilly, it can affect your sleep by disrupting your core body temperature. Hot environments can reduce the amount of REM sleep you get, causing you to feel less rested. On the other hand, a room that’s too cold will make it difficult for you to fall asleep in the first place. 

To find a happy medium and the best temperature for sleep, you can use lighter or heavier blankets and drift off at the perfect temperature.

Warm

If you live in a hot climate or struggle with feeling too warm during the night, use a sheet blanket to stay cool. Sheet blankets feel like a sheet on one side and a blanket on the other, so you don’t have to use a top sheet. The fabric is soft, lightweight, and breathable, so you can reach your ideal temperature for sleep.

To keep your room cool, try setting your thermostat to between 60 and 67 degrees a few hours before bed. If you don’t have AC, keep your windows and blinds shut all day to keep out the sun and heat. During the cooler evening hours, open a few windows to let the air circulate. 

Warmer

For a slightly warmer temperature, try a medium blanket. Unless you’re experiencing a very hot summer or cold winter, a medium blanket should be the perfect, cozy weight to foster the best temperature for sleep.

Warmest

Those who live in cooler climates can use heavy blankets to bring their ambient temperature up to 65 degrees. In addition, you could use a space heater, wear socks and a hat, place a rug on the floor, or move your bed away from the windows to stay toasty and warm.
