There’s no overstating the importance of a good night’s sleep. Sleeping well has a number of positive impacts on overall health, susceptibility to specific conditions, and various aspects of brain function and mood. But for many, sleeping well — and sleeping consistently through the night — can be a challenge. To help you get your recommended dose of nightly rest, here are five key tips for a better night’s sleep.

1. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

From lighting to bedding, nodding off in a space that feels tailor-made to put you at ease is essential to how to sleep better naturally. Minimize noise as much as you can (noise-dampening black-out curtains can pack a powerful one-two punch), and be sure to replace your mattress on a recommended cadence. Perhaps most importantly, choose sheets and blankets that are soft, comfortable, and offer the right amount of warmth to allow you to sleep through the night.

2. Stick to a Routine

Going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time each day is one of the most effective tips for a better night’s sleep. Help your body find its groove with a wind-down ritual that works for you, like reading a chapter of a novel or drinking a cup of chamomile tea. Popular apps like Headspace also offer pre-sleep meditations and calming music to help you wind down at the end of the day.

3. Watch Your Food & Drink

Consuming certain foods and beverages close to bedtime can have a major impact on your sleep cycles. Avoid caffeine intake starting in the early afternoon, and try to limit large meals in the evening, as well as sugar, nicotine, and alcohol close to bedtime. As a simple tip for a better night’s sleep, a nightcap may help you fall asleep initially but can have the effect of waking you up later on during the night.

4. Be Mindful of Temperature

All bodies are different, and finding the optimal temperature for yours can be an important part of how to sleep better naturally, especially during seasonal shifts. Stock heavier weighted throws and blankets during the colder months, and swap out your bedding with a cotton blanket during the summer. And of course, simply keeping an eye on the thermostat is one of the easiest tips for a better night’s sleep.

5. Minimize Stress

Establishing some rituals for managing stress can be crucial for how to sleep better. Make a conscious shift to leave worries at the door rather than bringing them to bed with you, and end the day with a meditation or calming breathing exercise. Organizing your thoughts, worries, and to-do items as part of your daily routine (and in a separate area of the house from the bedroom) can also be a vital tip for a better night’s sleep.
